New year, new fresh start

HNY

YES! It's a new year, a time to start over, to think about all the ways you've messed things up (kidding!) and all the things you want to do better. I have SO much I want to focus on this year. It's not really about losing a certain number of pounds (although I could spare a few, but whatever), or taking Ben on a certain number of play dates. This is more about looking at the various aspects of my life, and trying to be better. Just in general. Is that possible? I hope so. We'll see. But, these are the things I'm planning on focusing on. I'll for sure be adding to this list, and revisiting it regularly. Here we go!

ME.

  • Let myself off the hook. I don't need to be teaching Ben geography. He will watch tv sometimes. IT'S OK. He's safe and happy and loved.
  • Take care of myself more. Long relaxing baths. More time for reading. The occasional manicure.
  • Be more mindful of my health. Take my vitamins. Get outside more. Schedule a checkup. Visit the (dreaded) dentist.
  • Stop complaining. Just in general. Or do it less at least. No one likes a whiner.
  • Take a moment. When I'm frustrated, or mad, or having a tough day with Ben. Try not to instantly react, but take a moment, a deep breathe, and move on.
  • Talk less, listen more. I added this to a list before and I still like it. I may not always do it, but I want to try.
US.
  • Plan a night away, just the two of us.
  • More date nights. We do this regularly and it's honestly so much fun. We usually do dinner and a movie, or a concert. Feels like we're carefree kids again!
  • Have game nights. We used to do this, but we forgot about it. It's fun to play stupid games like Yahtzee.
  • Give each other a kiss every single day. Even if we're mad at each other. (All the more reason).
OUR FAMILY.
  • Family date nights. Like a date night, but Ben gets to come too!
  • Get outside more. Walks around the neighbourhood, hikes, that sort of thing.
  • Visit our grandparents more.
  • Plan a family vacation. We have a lot of house plans in the near future so this won't be any big fancy trips, but we were thinking about planning a few days at a cottage this summer.
  • Cook healthy family meals. I've been doing this much better since Ben started eating everything we are eating, but I just want to always think along these lines.
OUR HOME.
  • Declutter, even more. I have been working on this for months and it's totally addictive. I'm slowly working through each room, getting rid of the extra stuff, creating a cleaner, calmer space. I want to clear out an area of our house (even a single drawer) every week.
  • Work on the outside. This spring I am planning on spending a weekend tearing the garden apart, reseeding the lawn, all kinds of things like that. Ben will be old enough to probably spend a weekend with my parents (Mom, is that ok? Ha ha...) and then I can get it all done and ready for us to play in all summer!
  • Basement project. Billy has huge plans for our basement, and it may not all get done this year, but we want to get started. I'm VERY excited! Especially because I'm going to  paint the whole thing white! YESSSS. And it will double the space down there. Our basement is a great family room kind of space, but we've never done anything to it. It's in desperate need of new carpet, and a nice big sectional....
  • Finish our bedroom project. I want to replace our dressers and get side tables. Once that's done we can finish this room up and it will be our perfect little haven.
  • Relax about cleaning. I have an unhealthy need to have a clean home (not actually joking, it's terrible) and I want to stop thinking about cleanliness. I have scheduled two cleaning days a week (Monday and Thursday) and apart from that I will NOT think about how much pet hair is on, well, everything. Sigh.
That's my list so far...I'll for sure add to it but it's a good start!

A fresh start

meandben

A little while ago I had a moment (or rather, a few days worth of moments) of awakening. It happens to us all from time to time, but I realized that I had gotten myself stuck in a rut. A bad one. I was not taking care of myself, I was a big ball of stress, and I was not enjoying my (pretty blessed) life in the way I should be. I started talking to Billy about it, and he had noticed (of course) and wanted to do whatever he could to help. And since then, I've gone through a couple of weeks of reflection. I've thought about what I need to change, what steps I must take to make the changes, and how I can get myself back on track.

So, in the spirit of my list-obsession, and my adoration for New year's Resolutions, I'm making a mid-year resolution list. I know people hate resolutions, but I LOVE THEM. Like more than a friend. Granted, all of my resolution lists look pretty much the same, I still think it's really important to be aware of your own issues and try to change them....even if you only change them until you make your next list.

So, here is my newest version. It's going to take time to get everything going, but I'm already well on my way, and I feel SO MUCH BETTER.
  1. Take better care of myself. Take long baths, spend a little time each night before reading, do the things that I love to do (that I haven't made any time for since becoming a Mom).
  2. Take care of my health. Stress is an ongoing issue for me, I have pretty bad anxiety, and it's essential that I take care of myself to keep this in check. I've actually started running again (which I haven't done since before I was pregnant) and I'm already feeling better. I forgot how therapeutic running is for me.
  3. Work on my time management. Every Mom complains about balance and I know I'll never sit and say to myself "there we go, it's all perfectly balanced" but I do need to work on breaking up my time so that I'm devoting time to being a Mom, a business owner, etc.
  4. Simplify. This is vague, and that's because I mean simplify EVERYTHING. Things in my closet, things in my life...everything. For example, we're going to get rid of the house phone, because it's stupid to have. We're going to get rid of extra 'stuff' (read - declutter) but also extra time wasters, extra pressures, processes that are redundant in terms of my shop...you get the idea.
  5. Spend less time 'connected'. My biggest social media love is now Instagram, but I've backed off Twitter and Facebook and will stay that way. I've even taken off notifications, so I have to go out of my way to log in to FB to see what's going on. I feel like I can't keep up with it, and if I try, then I'm missing out on too many other things that are way more important. I do love Twitter, but I just can't check it all the time...I do now and then and I'm ok with that. As for FB, it has become so overcomplicated, it kind of takes the fun out of it. And it's the last thing I check in on nowdays. I'll make a point of staying connected with blogging pals through comments/twitter, etc. here and there. And, for the most part, my friends and I keep in touch through texts/emails anyway. Oh, and you know, the whole 'in person' method.
  6. Learn to be a better Mom. I feel like I am the last one to know everything when it comes to motherhood, and the truth is that I have not gone out of my way to stay on top of things. I'm going to look for good sources (because the information out there is so overwhelming, I need to narrow it down) and make it a point of staying in the loop on different stages, development things, etc. While I think my method of 'just see what happens' has it's perks, I need to find a happy medium. Side note, any Mom's out there have any good recommendations on websites/books they depend on? I feel like BabyCenter is pretty good, mixed with Dr. Sears. Any others?
  7. Stop pre-planning every second of my life. Here's how bad it's gotten. If I know Ben is going to have a nap soon (well, fingers crossed anyway) I will start to think about what needs to get done, and I get panicky thinking about how much I want to squeeze into this tiny portion of time. Like, I'm crazy. It needs to stop.
  8. Have fun. Plan fun things with Billy, go for walks, get outside, that sort of thing. I feel like over the past few weeks Billy and I have been doing this more than usual and I have been loving every minute of it. I just want to soak in every last minute of summer!
How about you guys, anyone feeling like they're in a rut these days? Any tips on what I should work in to my list?

(Billy took that picture if us the other night while we were on a dinner picnic. LOVE it.)

New year, new list

I've been thinking about my resolutions for days now. I always, always make a list. I know people hate resolutions...but I like the feeling of starting fresh, I always have, and why not? Who cares if you only eat better for three days. It's three days more than you did in December. So, without further adeau.

ResBanner
  1. Eat better, and get outside more. I don't plan on losing a certain amount of pounds, because I won't do it I'm sure. But this is something I can be a bit more concious of.
  2. Worry less. Anxiety fuels me in a lot of ways, but it's also by far my biggest downfall. It's not something that I like about myself, and I am going to try to not let it take over everything, all the time.
  3. Take better care of myself. Little things like, for example, giving myself a nice pedicure, or having a long bath after Ben is in bed. I don't make time for this at all anymore, and it's kind of the best part of being a girl (apart from having babies).
  4. Relax a bit about cleaning. I'm a certficable clean freak, and it's getting really old. I vow to clean my house once a week, not more than that, and not think about it SO much on the days when I haven't cleaned. Everything will be ok.
  5. Talk less, listen more. I saw this somewhere recently, and I liked it a lot. It's just one of those things that resonated with me.
  6. Try to live in the moment more. I know, this is very Oprah of me. But it's true, we are all so preoccupied with the future, or the past.
  7. Spend less time on the computer. Over the holidays I stayed off the computer and I LOVED it. I do love this blog, and have for years, but these days checking my google reader actually makes me nervous because I have too much to get caught up on. I've narrowed down my blog list to my absolute favs, and I will check in here and there. But for the most part, I just want to focus on playing with Ben and being here with my family.
  8. Take better pictures. I always use my iPhone, and I have a perfectly good camera sitting here doing nothing. I want to make a point of using it every day. We also bought a great little video camera that I want to try to use often too.
Anyone else working on a list? I may add more to this, but for now, this is where I'm starting.

Yay! I love January!

2011, here we come!

Happy new year everyone! I took a bit of a computer hiatus over the break, as I usually do, because I sit in front of one every day at work and it makes me feel like I’m working…even when I’m at home. Thankfully my iPhone keeps me in the loop….otherwise I would lose touch with the world completely. I do know the most important holiday news anyway….Natalie Portman is having a baby! No other news is really THAT important, is it?

Our holidays were lovely this year. Not as busy as usual, but just busy enough.

Now that we’re into January, resolutions are on my mind as usual…but I feel like most of mine are more to-do list items then resolutions. But, my list, my rules.

2011 – The List:
  • Have the nursery finished by the first week of February (paint colour is picked, which for me is always half the battle)
  • Have both bathrooms renovated by mid-March (eeek, is it possible?)
  • Organize linen closet
  • Get rid of the seven thousand old paint cans in our basement
  • Gather various stashes of old clothes, sort, and store in nice storage bins under our bed
  • Replace the cushions for our old wood chair in the basement (Finn had a little accident on the original ones in his younger days, so they are sadly ruined)
  • Buy euro pillows for our bed (nursing may be a challenge on a rod iron bed without them)
  • Eat more veggies
  • Eat less M&M’s, which I have failed to do for the past three years (this one starts today, my supply is out and I’m nervous!!)
  • Buy my coffee maker and learn how to make GOOD coffee at home
  • Exercise…lightly before baby, more so after (using weights AND cardio, not just watching tv and humming along on my elliptical)
  • Continue reading awesome books (this one is no challenge for me because I'm a bookworm...but finding good NEW books is hard)
  • Read ‘What to Expect The First Year’ which has been officially reserved at the library (some knowledge on taking care of new born babies seems like it would really come in handy soon)
  • Purge magazines, organize the keepers - I cheated and already did this one
  • Paint little section of ceiling where the attic door is
  • Finish buying the Robert Munsch collection of books that I have been compiling for the little one since before we knew he was coming...along with many, many other books that wer want him to read (Mr. Men, Berstein Bears included of course)
  • Don’t buy every baby thing in sight – at least wait until after the shower so I don’t end up with one billion onesies
  • Walk Cohen more (and make Billy come along)
  • Tidy the garden (spring goal, may not happen due to the whole baby thing)
  • Sort out basement storage (it’s a disaster)
  • Out a backsplash in the kitchen (maybe?)
  • Plan a really nice Valentine’s Day date with B
  • Wedding album project - yes, this is WAY late, but I focused on the wall pictures instead because I can see them all the time...and this one will be more daunting because I want it to include the pre-wedding and honeymoon stuff...so there
  • Pick a name for the baby (sooner than later, ideally)
  • Kiss Billy more...because he's the best husband ever
2011, I have a feeling you are going to be a breath of fresh air. And I can’t wait for every second of it!!

2010 New Years Resolutions (and a look back on last year’s)

I won’t bother mentioning how quickly the year went by…we all know it. But what a year it was. The first part of the year was so focused on selling a house, buying a house….and the last part of the year has been all about enjoying it! It has been a really amazing time…and I’m so excited to start a new year in our new home.

Before I get going on my resolutions for 2010, I want to take a look back on last year’s list, see how I did, and add any that I neglected to this years list!

2009’s resolutions:

1. Read more. And read really, really good books.

I have done well with this in the latter part of 2008, and I want to continue this through 2009. First on the list, my new Wally Lamb book (thanks Rach!!). While we were planning the wedding, I was so preoccupied with reading wedding books that I forgot all about reading a good novel. I have a lot on my list to read, and several friends at work who are on the reading bandwagon with me, so it should be a fun challenge.

(Update: I did very well with this one. I re-read several classics, including We the living by Ayn Rand and The Catcher in the Rye by Salinger. I have started 2010 with The Alchemist, and there are many more on by list for the year.)

2. Take more pictures.

And not just dance party pictures. Even through they’re my fav.

(Update: While I did take pictures, they are admittedly 99.9% dance-party focused. So, this will have to be on the 2010 list.)

3. Pull out my old dusty attempt at a novel.

For a really long time, I was certain that I was meant to be a writer. I still think it’s in me, but in the past I was too critical of my own writing to actually get the words on paper. I need to let myself ramble out the idea, and edit later. So, we’ll see if I can give it another go. Besides, you’re never too old to be an author. But so far, I think I may have been too young to be one.

(Update: Here is my first huge failure. Although I thought, a lot, about my novel, the time that has passed since I was writing is very daunting to me. I WILL work on this in 2010.)

4. Be healthy.

I’m thinking lots of fruits and veggies. Maybe not quite so many peanut M&M’s. Or Swedish berries.

(Update: For the most part, I did well with this. We have added to this a bit in the 2010 list…)

5. Be active.

Ash and I have a spring tennis date in the works. So that’s covered. Not to mention the workout I get from our eager Golden Retriever dragging me around Dundurn park.

(Update: Buying my elliptical really helped me with this one. I really do work out a good 3 to 4 times each week, and I fully plan on doing so this year, and all years in the future.)

6. Cook amazing food.

Now and then we get stuck in one of those ruts where we’re obsessed with eating Zoodles and toast. This will not change, we love our Zoods. But we used to do dinner really well. Pasta, and salad, and garlic bread. In serving dishes, at the dinner table. With a side of wine. I think I need a new cookbook.

(Update: I feel that I did achieve this one. I have tried several new recipes, we have new favourites, and with the help of my new Jamie Oliver Cookbook and Kitchenaid food processor, I’m confident that 2010 will continue to be a great food year.)

7. Embrace vintage.

When I was a kid, my Mom and Dad took me to tons of garage sales and flea markets. At the time I used to drag my heels and whine, looking for the nearest place to get hotdogs. But, I also grew up in a house filled with old radios and books no one’s ever heard of and one of a kind wooden dressers. We have some of that. But we want more.

(Update: This is a work in progress, but it has been started. In the spring I plan to revisit Circle M, and build more upon our current antiques. Particular items we’re looking for, an old upright piano, a rotary phone, and a big wooden trunk.)

8. Have really good parties.

So this isn’t a new thing, we do this pretty well. But, after the flurry of parties we had through the holidays, a few things are clear. Parties are better with lots of food, and lots of champagne.

(Update: 100% accomplished. And then some.)

9. Look for more music.

I vaguely remember going to Chapters to buy Filter magazine. I would open it and get on the computer and listen to everything it suggested. I would use Amazon and then look at bands in the ‘People who bought this also bought…’ section. I have been really lazy with this. And I’m sick of listening to the same songs. My current music repertoire is limited to the songs I hear on Gossip Girl. It’s that bad.

(Update: Not accomplished, but 100% on my 2010 list.)

10. Plan a trip.

Being in Montreal with Billy was one of the best times I’ve ever had. I think we’re good tourists. And I think we need some new trips to look forward to.

(Update: This is one of those goals where if it doesn’t happen, you can chalk it up to life. We bought a house this year, so the trip took a backseat. And with everything we have going on in 2010, the same may hold true. But, traveling is in our one-day plans, and we’re totally ok with that.)

And now, for my 2010 list. Here are my goals for the upcoming year:

1. Read books, obviously, but books that are outside of my normal realm.

I have a habit of sticking to one kind of book. They have to take place in a small number of cities (preferably New York, New England, or anywhere in the UK). They have to read like old fiction. I can seriously read the back of a book that begins with “A young girl in Texas…” and just the place will turn me off. Close minded, indeed. As mentioned earlier, I have started with The Alchemist, which is quite good. My next book is going to be The Year of the Flood by Margaret Atwood, which looks completely bizarre and crazy.

2. Find music.

I am sadly still in the soundtrack mode…500 Days of Summer being my most recent inspiration. But, I have been compiling a list on my blackberry of bands to look for, and my music collection will grow this year.

3. See music.

So far on our list for 2010; Wilco and Muse. This one really depends on when our favourite bands tour. But if they do, we’ll be there.

4. Get more sleep.

I usually get about 6 to 7 hours, and that’s not enough. I’m a much cooler person when I’ve slept well. And although I force myself to get up early because I love the quietness of the early morning, I have to them also force myself to get to bed earlier. Something’s gotta give.

5. Eat more salmon.

Further to the health resolution above, I want to be more specific with it. I want to find at least 3 go-to recipes for salmon, and make it often. If anyone knows of any good ones, let me know!

6. Focus on a few house projects.

This is vague, admittedly. But, it has to be that way. There are many projects we want to work on, but we have to really attack each one based on convenience, finances, and our own do-it-yourselfer abilities. Our first home project of 2010 is going to be a basement facelift (mostly paint and décor related). Other plans on the agenda include both bathrooms, a garden overhaul, and windows. And MAYBE new flooring, but we’ll see.

7. Write.

This will be on every list I ever have I think. But, it has to be. Even if I fail miserably, I can’t ignore the fact that it’s a life goal of mine.

8. Stress less.

I’m a worrier. Always have been, always will be. But, rest assured I’d rather not be. This is my reminder to be less worrisome.

9. In the words of my wise father, get rid of ‘chatchka’.

Basically, de-clutter.

10. Spend time with friends.

Over the past year I have reconnected with a few people, and I don’t think I have ever been as happy as I am now. I am surrounded by completely real, unpretentious, supportive, admirable people. I want to see them as often as possible. Especially before *some* of them move away from me forever (ok, not forever, but for a damn long time).

11. Take lots of pictures, again.

No pressure here, they can be anything. Just as long as I keep my camera handy, and document this amazing life of ours.

12. Live in the moment.

I know, this sounds so Oprah. But it really is something we all forget to do, and I may be the worst. I realized over the holidays how hard it is for me to just sit with a cup of tea and relax. I’m so fidgety, and I always feel the need to be working on something. This will always be true, and I like that…but I also need to find a way to just be still, and be ok with it. Stop planning the next thing.

13. Be thankful.

It’s so easy to get caught up in the hussle and bussle of every day life. No matter how busy things get, and believe me they get busy….I have to make an effort to sit back and realize how lucky I am.

Resolutions for 2009

My current list. Will likely change 8764096 times. I like lists.
