Fall cleaning - purging and sorting out our chaos

fallcleaning

Spring cleaning is a huge thing, but I like to do that seasonally...partly because I'm a lunatic and partly because it makes the job easier if you spread it out a bit. So, with the holidays right around the corner, while everyone is hanging their Christmas lights, I'm going through every room in our house and PURGING. Now's as good a time as any.

Here's what I'm tossing:

  • Clothes that I haven't worn in months
  • Clothes Ben can't fit into
  • Old/unnecessary toys
  • Bed linens that we don't use anymore
  • Old coats
  • Old shoes
  • Household items we don't need

Ben already has too many toys, and toys he's grown out of. His little body is growing at lightening speed so half of his dresser is always occupied by too-small clothes. And I haven't done a clothes purge since I lost my baby belly (ok so it's not COMPLETELY gone, that's not the point!). If you hate getting rid of clothes, and you always find yourself holding on to things just in case, here's a really good tip: keep a big container somewhere in your house for clothes you THINK you want rid of. Do your purge and toss your old clothes in there ruthlessly. If you go 5 or 6 months without ever going into it, then pour the whole thing in a donation bag on your next purge (don't even look, you'll talk yourself into keeping it all again).

Donating stuff like this is easier these days than ever. I called Clothesline, a Canadian donation program, and on November 30th they will be coming here to pick everything up. There is no limit, you simply label all of your bags or boxes with a big 'D' and leave them at the curb. It couldn't be more simple!

Purging is therapeutic for me, and I find I'm way happier when I know that at least some of the junk in our house is gone. Over the past few years I've realized the beauty of less...it started ages ago when I started reading Zen Habits. Are you familiar with this blog? I read it all the time and LOVE it. It's all about living a minimalist life, getting rid of clutter (in your home and life), and finding beauty in simplicity  I make a habit of reading every post. And no, my home isn't minimalist or clear of all clutter (I wish) but I like being aware of this sort of thing and making an effort to keep our home free of junk. It's taken a while, but I find that I'm wanting less stuff now more than ever. Oh I still want things, lots of things, but now I think more about my purchases. I talk myself out of buying things sometimes now, and that NEVER used to happen.

For example, last year Billy bought me an amazing Coach bag for Christmas. Now, I used to buy a new H&M bag every season (for real), but now I realize how wasteful that is. Wastes my money, and I grow sick of it so quickly (the donation bag full of purses proves it). It's so much better to have a smaller collection of really great clothes (I don't mean expensive, but I mean timeless, like a perfect-fitting cotton t-shirt), than it is to have 10 tops in colours that could only be worn in Spring 2011.

In thinking about the holidays, I'm trying to be really careful with my gift-giving too. I want to go out of my way to get great gifts for my family and friends that will be timeless and thoughtful, and not something that will end up in next springs purge pile ;)

If you'd like to read a bit of Zen Habits, I'd really recommend these articles:
How about you, do you love to toss old stuff, or is it a dreaded activity? Any good purging tips to share?

Sunsets and lazy Fridays

It's Friday again already...why do the weeks go SO quickly in he summer? Did anyone happen to catch the amazing sunset we had last night? I got a picture, which doesn't do it justice, but I thought I would share anyway. Oh how I love summer sunsets.

Today I plan on spending the day doing the following:

  • Cleaning my house from top to bottom
  • Ordering sushi and edamame from a sushi place I just discovered that's about 3 minutes from my house (yay!)
  • Reading through the new Ikea catalogue that finally made an appearance in my mailbox

As for the rest of the weekend, Billy and I plan on spending it snuggling our little boy. That, plus a quick trip to Home Depot of course. Here are a couple of cute snuggling-Benjamin photos I took the other day.

A weekend post

Happy Monday loves!

Hope everyone had a great Canada Day weekend...saw fireworks, had barbeques, that sort of thing. I kept rather busy this weekend, and have started the week with a to-do list a mile long (no surprise here). I took a few pictures along the way, it was a great one!

Saturday was spent with Rach and Ben in the garden. We have both been working on projects and needed to brainstorm on things together, it was amazing! And as you can see, we had all of the requirements of a good pow wow: notepads, fresh fruit,iPhones and Benjamin.

Aunty Rach got in her snuggles too of course. He loves her VERY much.

I made the Strawberry Rhubarb Crisp and it was insanely yummy. There are zero leftovers. You should make this.

Saturday night was spent desperately trying to capture a smile on camera. No dice. But take our word for it that there were smiles in between about 47 takes.

A quick bath on Sunday to cool the baby off. Benjamin loves his baths :)

The start of a little project. Looks terrible now I realize...but in about two weeks should look great! After pictures to follow, naturally.

We ended things off watching True Blood along with some father son snuggles.

Lots of them. ♥

December!

It’s getting close! The air is chilly and the advent calendars have been opened…only 23 days until Christmas!

With the new house comes a whole new way of decorating for the holidays. This past few days we put up not one, but two trees…an amazing white one in the living room, and our traditional one in the rec room. Some things we didn’t bother with, like the garland, which just doesn’t have the same effect on our new stairway (and Finn would have it in shreds within a day or two).

018

The next few weeks are bound to be chaotic. Many shopping dates are planned. Christmas parties, work get togethers…lots of planning, baking and to-do list writing going on. But I can’t complain….this is, after all, the BEST time of year.

Here is just a bit of my extensive to-do list.
  1. Watch my favourite Christmas movies (already started, but includes White Christmas, it’s a Wonderful Life, The Family Stone, Merry Christmas Charlie Brown, and National Lampoon’s Christmas vacation, to name a few)
  2. Bake. A lot. December is not the time to go easy on calories.
  3. Take Cohen to the Peir. Normally a summer place, yes, but I love it when it’s cold. Hot chocolates and mittens are a must.
  4. Plan the dishes to bring to various potluck parties. Most importantly, the work one. Note: very important not to give any colleagues, or my boss, food poisoning.
  5. Try not to buy every holiday dress I see. I’m really taken with sequins, they get me every time.
  6. Finish my Christmas shopping one week before Christmas. Ever since I worked in retail, the mall the week before Christmas makes me a little nauseous.
  7. Work on my resolution list for next month. (Yes, I have added ‘make a list’ to this list).
  8. Buy some special treats for the pets for Christmas. I never really do this, and I guess this makes me a terrible pet owner.
  9. Download all of the 80’s Christmas music I can find. I heart the 80’s.
  10. Find a day, somewhere in the next 23, to relax. Or sleep in. Or a combination of both.

Kitchen goes black

Kitchen goes black

More accomplished this weekend! Here is a glimpse of our kitchen mid way through the project. It’s actually finished now and PERFECT! The living room is also fully painted now, so that’s four rooms down, two to go! Should be a piece of cake.

On Saturday we did a big Ikea run, so we’re all set for furniture. The EQ3 couch is ordered, the patio set is set up. Progress!!

This week we have a good size to-do list already in the works. I’m hoping to have all of the painting done by the weekend so I can relax for my holidays which start this Friday!!!

To do:
  • Paint both guest rooms
  • Pick up new light fixture for bathroom
  • Buy garden lights
  • Exchange kitchen chair, master bedroom curtain rod and blinds
  • Set up new TV unit for rec room
